Tangalle
196 km from Colombo, Tangalle is one of the most popular and attractive
places for tourists. While Tangalle town offers most of the facilities
there are many hotels, guest houses and restaurants. You can see many
tourists holidaying in this area, specially Madaketiya white sand beach
and Goyambokka area. There are many swimming spots.
There is a diving school ‘Let’s Dive’ which all the
hotels and guest houses direct you to for diving. Turtle – watching
at Rakawa is an attraction, just about 10 km from Tangalle town on Hambantota
road. You have to turn to the beach side from Netolpitiya Junction. The
Turtle Conservation Project has facilities to watch Turtles.
From Tangalle and Dickwella you can visit Mulkirigala Rock Temple which
is on a rock where you have to climb more than 500 steps made out of granite.
There are seven caves where reclining statues of Buddha and many paintings
inside caves are to be found.
Wevurukannala
The largest seated Lord Buddha statute is 50 m high. An eight story building
is there backing the statue and you can climb to the top of the building.
Inside the building walls are painted to show events of Lord Buddhas’
life. There are life size graphics of sinners and the ways of punishing
them. You have to turn from Dickwella towards Beliatta to reach here.
Blow Hole
The blow-hole, or ‘Hummanaya’ in Mawella, Dickwella, is an
attractive natural feature. Sea spray splashes upto 40-50 feet during
the monsoon period and attracts many a foreign and local tourist. |
