| Arugam Bay is a fishing village on the
eastern coast just 3 km from Pottuvil town. You can reach Arugam Bay from
Monaragala on A4 and from Batticaloa. It is believed to be the best surf
in Sri Lanka. It is developing into a tourist attraction mainly because
of the beach which tourists visit throughout the year. The surfing season
is April to September. Almost all the guest houses and hotels are operative
and full during this season. You also can rent boats and go on boat trips.
Crocodile Rock is famous, as you can see wild elephants at almost any
given time. You can see elephants on the Monaragala-Pottuvil road and
Batticaloa-Pottuvil road.
You can reach Lahugala National Park (about 16 km on A4 road) and Yala
National Park from here.
Further down to Arugam Bay you can visit Panama, a remote village, and
on your way reach Kudumbigala where you can see a first century BC inscription
on the rock temple. There are 225 caves and this had been a meditation
centre in the past. Further you can see a famous Hindu Kovil at Okanda
where all the pilgrims gather to walk to Kataragama through Yala sanctuary
and Kumana.
Muhudu Maha Vihara
Muhudu Maha Vihara, Arugam Bay, Pottuvil the ruins of an ancient Buddhist
Temple, perhaps dating to the pre-christian era, could be seen here. There
are statues of a huge Buddha and of Kavan Tissa and Vihara Maha Devi,
the parents of the Sinhalese national hero Dutugemunu.
Magul Maha Viharaya
Off the A4 road and about 4 km to south. The ruins comprise of guard-stones,
moonstones and the Vatadage - a circular shaped relic temple, wedding
stage of King Kavanthissa and Vihara Maha Devi. |
