| Deegawapi
Dagoba
This is one of the country's holiest centres of Buddhist pilgrimage, being
a site where Buddha meditated. Deegawapi Dagoba was built by Prince Saddhatissa,
younger son of King Kavantissa of Ruhuna (3rd Cent. BC). The ancient glories
have suffered much destruction. Excavations have revealed many ancient
ruins.
Marudamunai
A town renowned for its large community of Moor weavers. It manufactures
sarees, sarongs and bed and table linen, besides reed items like mats
and wall hangings.
Kadakkarai Palli, Kalmunaikadi
The Kadakkarai Palli or 'Beach Mosque' is dedicated to a 16th century
South Indian Muslim Saint, Shahul Hamid. An annual festival held here
coincides with the great Nagore festival in Tamil Nadu.
Muslim Cultural Museum, Addalaichenai
A museum especially dedicated to preserving the heritage of the country's
Muslims. Among the exhibits are copies of the Quran, including miniature
Qurans, medical handbooks, dress, headgear, jewellery and household items
like coffee cups, rose-water sprinklers and Kohl containers.
